The Mentor Support Network (MSN) has announced the launch of its unique pilot program for 2019 which aims to assist young people with a refugee background living in the Hunter Region.
The program will assist ten students in achieving their educational and career goals with the assistance of mentors and scholarships. The program was made possible thanks to the donation of $30,000 from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.
MSN Executive and Program Coordinator, Jennifer Flinn said the refugee student program is unique.
“It focuses on identifying the student’s strengths, helping them navigate the Australian landscape of education which is new to them,” Jennifer said.
MSN is currently looking for business and community leaders to play a role in empowering young people of the Hunter as mentors.
“That’s why we’re calling on experienced business people and community members to play a significant role in empowering young people by volunteering as a mentor. By contributing your time, talents and networks, you can make a genuine and positive difference in the life of a new Australian,” Jennifer said.
The contribution of volunteer time, talents and work could help children who often face challenges in accessing the support and guidance needed to navigate the demands of settling into a new country.
“The level of energy, excitement and determination that MSN volunteers put in… they don’t see it as a hobby because they truly believe they are making a positive difference… and they are. I’ve seen it,” Jennifer said.
If volunteering for this program interests you, please complete an online application form on the MSN website by 14th September.
In addition to this new program, MSN also provides education scholarships to students in financial need and offers support to mentors in the community. The next Mentor Support Network training program for mentors will be held on 31 August and will provide a basic understanding of mentoring and potential strategies that may be used. An additional course will be held on 7 September which will continue to build skills with detailed discussion and examples of mentoring in action. A workshop on Mentoring Students with Special Needs will be held on 4 September.
Applications for mentoring roles close on 14 September this year.
