Newcastle tourism operator NOVA Cruises has commissioned its new flagship commercial catamaran, the NOVA Spirit, during an industry assembly marking the company’s 20th anniversary of operations. The launching ceremony, held at Lee Wharf in Honeysuckle on Thursday 9 July 2026, signals a significant capital investment into the Hunter’s visitor economy and expands the region’s high-capacity marine transit and tourism infrastructure.
The purpose-built vessel is projected to become one of the largest specialised tourism catamarans operating on the Australian eastern seaboard. The asset deployment scales the firm’s commercial capacity across premium corporate charter streams, offshore whale-watching programs, and scheduled harbour dining itineraries, modernising a fleet that has operated within the Port of Newcastle since 2006.
During the official proceedings, Marketing Manager Natalie Kelly outlined the corporate agility required to sustain tourism operations alongside Newcastle’s rapid urban transition over the past two decades. The operational cycle encompassed major structural re-zonings, including the removal of the heavy rail corridor, the delivery of the light rail network, the expansion of the Honeysuckle waterfront precinct, and ongoing complex harbour logistics management.
Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Gavin Morris endorsed the enterprise’s long-term commercial contribution, noting that local transport and tourism operators underpin the city’s evolving identity as a premium business and leisure travel destination.
General Manager of Destination NSW, Glenn Caldwell reinforced that specialised small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) function as critical economic drivers, generating regional employment, stimulating supply chain spend, and drawing domestic and international visitation to regional hubs.
The formal christening and ribbon-cutting ceremony were performed by NOVA Cruises Owner, Peter Hanrahan. The maritime celebration included a coordinated harbour exhibition featuring a precision performance by the Svitzer Tug Boat Ballet, an advanced low-altitude aerial display by global aerobatic pilot Matt Hall, and a double cannon salute fired from the Fort Scratchley historic precinct.
Owner of NOVA Cruises, Peter Hanrahan said that long-term asset development relies on stable regional consumer markets and strong workforce frameworks.
