Baker Love continues to develop its team to meet market needs, announcing the appointment of a new Partner and recruitment of a new Family Law Specialist.
Matthew Carney, who has been with the firm since 2019, has been named as Baker Love’s newest Partner. The Solicitor has led the family and criminal practice at Baker Love since joining in April 2019.
“I am very excited to be joining the partnership of Baker Love Lawyers and I look forward to working with my fellow partners to maintain the excellent reputation the firm enjoys both locally and nationally,” Matthew said.
He hopes to use his new tenure to expand the expert services provided at the firm, seeing demand in the community for superior legal services across several areas, despite the impact of COVID-19.
In fact, the firm has seen an increased demand for expertise in the field of family law as a result of the pandemic, with parties needing to agree on or enforce existing care arrangements for children due to border closures and lockdowns.
Rising property prices in the regions are also impacting financial settlements between parties.
“The family law practice area continues to grow, but we are also seeing demand in other areas. There are plans to increase our presence in the Newcastle and national market, aided by the recent redevelopment of our website and the addition of new lawyers and support staff.”
The latest to join the firm is Abby Thorne, an avid horse breeder and show jumping enthusiast.
Abby, who completed a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Communications at the University of Newcastle in 2017 comes to Baker Love with specialist expertise in civil litigation, wills, estates, and family law.
She has honed her skills in these areas, working in firms that have given her in-depth experience in leading complex matters, in the Hunter region and Sydney.
Her practical experience in wills and estates is accompanied by her current study of a Master of Applied Law, majoring in wills and estates and family.
Her masters, which she is undertaking through the College of Law, is almost finished, with just two more subjects to complete.
“I was attracted to Baker Love as it provides the opportunity to work with an accredited family law specialist with a stellar reputation,” Abby said.
“Already, I can say I love working at Baker Love as I have been able to apply my knowledge and experience widely across many settings. I hope to provide my clients with the reliable and quality legal services the firm is known for so they feel confident and supported from beginning to end of their matter.”
