Hunter region poised for strategic opportunities at 2024 Defence Conference

Former Prime Minister The Hon Kevin Rudd AC, in conversation with The Hon Joel Fitzgibbon, will be a key highlight of the two-day 2024 Hunter Defence Conference, scheduled for 21 and 22 August.

The 2024 National Defence Strategy outlines the Government’s strategic framework to guide the significant and urgent changes required to address Australia’s challenging strategic circumstances. Together with the rebuilt Integrated Investment Program, the National Defence Strategy serves as a blueprint to deliver an ambitious transformation of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) into an integrated, focused force capable of safeguarding Australia’s security for decades to come.

Tim Owen AM, Defence Industry Adviser and Chair of the Hunter Defence Taskforce, noted that the Australian Government’s focus on defence strategy and investment planning presents significant opportunities for the Hunter industry.

“The National Defence Strategy, released in April 2024, includes six immediate priorities, all of which could provide opportunities for Hunter-based prime contractors and small to medium enterprises,” Tim said.

A primary objective of the strategy is advancing conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarine capability. Attendees will receive a virtual update on AUKUS, the strategic partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, from former Prime Minister and current Ambassador to the United States, The Hon Kevin Rudd AC.

“A key part of AUKUS is developing robust and resilient sovereign supply chains, where the Hunter defence industry can make a significant contribution,” Tim added.

“The Hunter defence industry is highly capable, and the Hunter Defence Conference serves as a gateway for government, industry, and defence forces to collaborate in addressing Australia’s strategic risks.”

Tim also referenced the recently released Defence Industry Development Strategy, which recognises the defence industry as a critical partner in providing the deterrence needed for Australia’s strategic circumstances.

The 2024 Hunter Defence Conference agenda features speakers from government, defence forces, prime contractors, and industry.

The 2024 Hunter Defence Conference, taking place at the Rydges Resort, will feature key discussions on defence investment, capability development, and collaboration with defence primes. Day one highlights include a keynote by NSW Premier The Hon Chris Minns, a discussion on AUKUS with The Hon Kevin Rudd and The Hon Joel Fitzgibbon, a presentation on the Astra Aerolab innovation precinct by Dr. Peter Cock, and strategic insights from senior military and industry leaders. Networking opportunities will also be a focal point of the event.

Day two will cover defence technology, industry support, and SME compatibility. The agenda includes discussions on AUKUS and sub-surface technology, a panel on funding options with local investors, a session on AI trends in the defence sector, and a panel featuring local defence businesses addressing SME challenges and opportunities. The conference will conclude with a networking social and gala dinner, featuring a keynote address by The Hon Pat Conroy MP, Minister for Defence Industry.
