Construction begins on University of Newcastle New Energy Skills Hub

Construction has commenced on the University of Newcastle’s New Energy Skills Hub, a purpose-built facility designed to develop critical skills for the region’s energy transition. The $20 million project is funded by a $16 million Australian Government investment under the Priority Community Infrastructure Program, with the university contributing $4 million toward delivery.

The facility will provide hands-on training for students from the university, TAFE and other training providers. Graduates will have access to specialist equipment and direct industry exposure to prepare for emerging energy opportunities in the Hunter.

The 905 square metre building features an open-plan workshop area with five dedicated functional zones for education, training, testing and demonstration. Grindley Construction has been appointed to deliver the main construction work, with the project expected to reach completion in the first quarter of 2027.

Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon said the government is committed to helping the regional workforce prepare for future industries.

“For generations, Newcastle and the Hunter have powered Australia’s economy. With the right investment in skills, research and innovation, we can continue powering the nation long into the future,” Sharon said.

“This facility will give researchers, students and industry the capability to test and develop new technologies at scale.”

Sharon said the investment ensures the region remains an energy powerhouse for decades to come.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Belinda Tynan said the hub will ensure students have access to practical training as the Hunter prepares for a carbon-neutral future.

“The University of Newcastle is first and foremost a university for our regions,” Belinda said.

“The New Energy Skills Hub will ensure our students have access to the industry-ready training they need to step into the jobs of tomorrow.”

The project marks the first step in the development of the university’s Next Generation Resources Park, an expansion of its industrial innovation precinct. The facility will offer a range of education pathways, including micro-credentials, technical development accreditation and bespoke industrial courses.

Professor, Alan Broadfoot said the facility will facilitate a cooperative approach to skills development in critical sectors.

“The hub will be used by STEM students from both tertiary and VET sectors, secondary schools and industry,” Alan said.

“It will act as a regional catalyst to foster the existing and emerging industries which sustain our communities.”

The hub will also serve as a testbed for industry, providing tools to enhance systems and components in a range of environments.
