$32,000 in financial support up for grabs for Port Stephens students

Port Stephens students have an opportunity to receive $2,000 to help pay for their studies with the Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships opening last week.

Thirteen businesses have generously contributed $32,000 collectively to the scholarship pool. Valued at $2,000 each, the scholarships provide financial support to residents from the Port Stephens local government area who are starting university or TAFE in 2019.

This years’ sponsors include Ampcontrol, Destination Port Stephens, Hunter Land, Hunter Readymixed Concrete, McDonald Jones Homes, Newcastle Airport, Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, Salamander Bay Recycling, Soldiers Point Bowling Club, Suez Recycling and Recovery, Tomago Aluminium, Weathertex and The Wests Group Australia.

Port Stephens Mayor, Ryan Palmer said the program is designed to support the ambitions of young people in Port Stephens.

“Port Stephens is a great place to live and work, and we want to encourage our young people to pursue their passion by furthering their studies,” Ryan said.

“Our growing regional economy has a diverse range of career opportunities — from tourism and business to aged care, manufacturing, science, technology, engineering and maths.

“The Mayoral Academic Scholarships are helping to create Port Stephens’ workforce for the future.”

Ryan said he is immensely proud to have such an array of businesses supporting this important initiative.

“This year, we have 16 scholarships totalling $32,000. Port Stephens’ businesses know the value of supporting our future leaders,” Ryan said.

“I want to thank each and every one of the businesses who contributed to this fantastic program for their support and for helping our local youth to achieve their goals and fulfil their dreams.

“The program not only supports students financially, but offers both the business sponsor and the student an opportunity to grow and become leaders of Port Stephens.”

Applications close 5pm Friday 18 January 2019 and the presentation night will be held on Thursday 14 February 2019.
