Local, family-run business, Matthews Jewellers, has expanded their management team with the appointment of local businessman Sam Matthews to the role of Business Development Manager.
Son of founder, Stephen Matthews, Sam began his career within the graduate development program with Commonwealth Bank and spent the next 13 years in various roles in their Newcastle, Sydney and Indonesia offices, with a focus on business relationships.
Sam acknowledges the new role is a shift in focus, but believes his experience working in partnership with business owners and managers will hold him in good stead.
“During my career I always noticed a difference in the ability of small business to be more agile and responsive in their approach, and since starting with Matthews Jewellers I’ve realised that is a clear differentiating factor for privately owned businesses too,” Sam said.
“Obviously I’ve always had an interest in the family business, but working on the inside of the business is definitely illuminating!
“I’m really enjoying the opportunity to transfer my skillset to the small business space and provide a new perspective to the team.”
The business is led by Stephen and Donna Matthews and Sam’s brother Adam heads up Product Management. They operate four stores in the Hunter region and are supported by a team of passionate and long-serving staff.
“We really pride ourselves on the fact that we are a family owned and operated business here in the Hunter Valley,” Stephen said.
“It’s great to have Sam as part of the team – he is already making a great impact!”
Sam is a graduate of the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Commerce and is currently a member of the Newcastle Business Club committee.
Matthews Jewellers is in its 40th year after first opening in Muswellbrook at 4pm on 10 August 1978, following in Stephen’s fathers’ footsteps who opened the original Matthews Jewellers store in Scone in 1957.
They specialise in fine jewellery with a focus on bridal and bespoke pieces. Matthews Jewellers can be found at Westfield Kotara, Charleston Square, Salamander Bay and Singleton.
