Youth suicide no trivial matter

Youth suicide no trivial matter

Over 160 people came together for the Hunter Young Professionals’ (hyp) annual trivia night at FogHorn Brewhouse on July 26 to help Lifeline in its mission to help eliminate youth suicide.

$1 from every ticket sold at the trivia night, and all hyp events this year, will be donated to hyp’s 2018 community partner Lifeline Hunter Central Coast.

Suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44. More than 3,000 Australians die by suicide each year, double the national road toll.

hyp president, Lauren Armstrong, was overwhelmed by the turnout of both hyp members and guests who rallied together to raise money for this important cause.

“We have built a great relationship with the local team at Lifeline Hunter Central Coast since the announcement of our partnership earlier this year,” Lauren said.

“As well as supporting young professionals with networking and professional development opportunities, we want to make a meaningful contribution to our community.

“It has been very encouraging to have community members get behind the cause, such as FogHorn Brewhouse, who reached out with this excellent fundraising idea and are matching our ticket donation for the evening dollar-for-dollar.”

Lifeline Hunter Central Coast Ambassador, Julie Wicks thanked hyp and FogHorn for raising awareness of suicide prevention and the much-needed funds to help it to save local lives. Julie said all funds raised by hyp will go to the 131114 crisis support service, face-to-face counselling and other community suicide prevention programs and suicide bereavement support groups run by Lifeline locally.

“Lifeline needs the business community to help raise awareness of the issues as well as funds to continue its work in the community, for the community,” Julie said.

hyp is a network for like-minded young professionals to network, gain new management and leadership skills, and interact socially while supporting the local community.
