The University of Newcastle has announced the extension of Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky’s contract until the end of 2028, reaffirming his leadership as the institution continues its upward trajectory.
Under Alex’s guidance, the university has seen its global ranking climb nearly 50 places, from 224 to 179, with student recruitment and retention surpassing targets.
Chancellor Patricia Forsythe, AM, praised the Vice-Chancellor’s achievements, noting the university’s national recognition for enabling pathways and its equal-first status in receiving the prestigious Athena Swan Silver Award for gender equity initiatives.
“Our university has been achieving and delivering outstanding results under Professor Zelinsky’s leadership,” Patricia said.
“We’ve been recognised widely, including by the Prime Minister, as national leaders in enabling pathways. We’ve also become the equal first University in the country to achieve Athena Swan Silver Award for our work to address gender equity. And we’ve achieved record philanthropic funding.
“All of these results reflect a university moving forward in the right way.
“As we embark on our university’s 60th year in 2025 and start shaping the next strategic plan for our University, the extension of the Vice-Chancellor’s term will bring stability and accountability for the next exciting phase for our institution.
“There are a number of major projects underway across the University, particularly on the Central Coast. We’re extending our offering on the Coast and that’s about more than just a building in the Gosford CBD. We’re really focussed on better serving the people on the Central Coast.
“With the new Gosford campus scheduled to welcome students in the coming years and many other projects underway, I am eager for our Vice-Chancellor to continue to see these projects through to fruition,” she said.
