Newcastle Racecourse generated $790,618 in philanthropic capital for local charities and non-profit organisations over the past financial year, establishing its Broadmeadow venue as one of the Hunter region’s largest community fundraising platforms. The capital distribution was executed through dedicated charity race meetings, corporate fundraising partnerships, and the venue’s internal Community Sponsorship Program.
The funds were distributed across 14 regional charitable organisations addressing critical social infrastructure challenges, including oncology research, mental health support, domestic violence prevention, crisis accommodation, food relief, and emergency services. Key beneficiaries included the Hunter Melanoma Foundation, Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, Mark Hughes Foundation, Hunter Food Relief, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and Jenny’s Place.
The fundraising model relies on commercial alignment between racecourse operations, local corporate sponsors, racegoers, and volunteer networks. Chief Executive Officer of Newcastle Racecourse, Duane Dowell stated that leveraging venue infrastructure for social impact remains a core strategic pillar for the organisation.
“At Newcastle Racecourse, we believe our role extends far beyond hosting race meetings. Every community race day is an opportunity to bring people together for something bigger than ourselves,” Duane said.
“When someone purchases a ticket, sponsors an event, enjoys a luncheon or simply spends a day at the races, they’re also helping support local families, fund vital medical research and strengthen organisations doing incredible work throughout our region. We’re incredibly proud that our venue has become a place where the Hunter community comes together not only to celebrate, but to give back. The real winners are the charities and the people whose lives are changed because of the generosity of our community.”
The financial support translates into operational capacity for regional frontline services, funding patient care programs, crisis accommodation placements, and essential medical research equipment.
Marketing and Fundraising Manager at the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, Josh Lawlor noted that long-term facility access and event support have provided stability for the foundation’s corporate fundraising calendar over a 17-year tenure.
“Over the past 17 years, Newcastle Racecourse has been an outstanding partner to work with. The team consistently goes above and beyond to support our event, and we genuinely value the relationship we have built together,” Josh said.
“The racecourse is always willing to collaborate, find solutions and help us create a memorable experience for our guests, volunteers and supporters. We are incredibly grateful for your ongoing commitment to our cause and are proud to partner with an organisation that shares our passion for community impact.”
Executive Officer of the Hunter Melanoma Foundation, Claudia Tolhurst stated that the venue’s annual event partnership generated $50,000 during its 30th anniversary race day, providing immediate funding for regional melanoma patient support programs.
“This was our 30th year of partnering with Newcastle Racecourse for the HMF race day. That partnership has given us the opportunity to raise funds year after year to support the work we do in the local community,” Claudia said.
“We’re grateful for the partnership and opportunity it presents to HMF and the wider community. This year’s fundraising of $50,000 is already making a difference to melanoma patients and their families.”
