The Roost Creative, one of the oldest co-working spaces in Newcastle, has announced the launch of its 2020 scholarships.
For one local emerging creative, The Roost Creative are offering a package worth more than $7000 to kick start their career.
The scholarship, which is supported by Newcastle Museum, The Business Centre and The Design Kids, gives local creatives the opportunity to take advantage of a range of kick-starter benefits.
The recipient will be given a full year membership at The Roost Creative, mentoring sessions with a business adviser, the chance to host an event at the museum, cash grants and more.
Current scholarship recipient, artist and illustrator Julia Jay, said that receiving the scholarship was a sign to stay in the area and start her career on the right path.
“When I got the call telling me I had been picked, I took it as a sign that I was meant to stay in Newcastle for another year which I’m so glad I did — this has been one of my favourite years of growth yet,” Julia said.
“I feel like I have expanded greatly this year. I’ve never been more challenged, inspired, excited and more alive in my entire life.”
Julia said that being part of such a safe and welcoming environment allowed her to dedicate herself to her work and flourish as a creative.
“Everyone at The Roost is so genuine and kind. They are also all very dedicated to their work and I feel their level of consistency and passion has greatly inspired me,” she continued.
Oliver Gaywood, the current General Manager of The Roost Creative, added that The Roost crew were very excited to be launching this opportunity again for local creatives.
“Everyone at The Roost is excited to offer the scholarship for a second year. We aim to support creatives in a number of different ways and the scholarship is there to help someone take a leap of faith,” Oliver said.
“Julia has been an incredible fit for our community. During her time here, she has created incredible work here and done all she can to push The Roost forward.”
The scholarship on offer from The Roost includes;
- A one year membership (includes desk space) at The Roost,
- Ten mentoring sessions with an adviser from The Business Centre,
- An opportunity to showcase your work at the Newcastle Museum, with promotional support from The Design Kids,
