A Newcastle-based rental agency is transitioning to a 100% contactless car-share model to address transport gaps between the region’s major hubs. Newcastle Car Rentals has established a network of designated zones at Newcastle Airport, the Newcastle Interchange and Birmingham Gardens, allowing travellers to access vehicles without using traditional rental desks.
The expansion comes as the Hunter region experiences increased demand for flexible transport options that operate outside of standard business hours. Unlike traditional rental chains that require physical offices and manual paperwork, the service utilises a smartphone-integrated platform for bookings and vehicle access.
Founder of Newcastle Car Rentals, Sujay Vasist said the business was created to address last mile connectivity issues facing the Hunter.
“We noticed that as Newcastle grew, the traditional rental experience was becoming a logistical hurdle for both visitors and locals,” Sujay said.
“Our goal was to make the car an invisible part of the journey. By removing the friction of the rental counter, we give people more time to spend in the city and less time standing in line.”
The contactless model allows guests to book a vehicle, walk to a designated zone and unlock the car using a digital key. This 24/7 accessibility is particularly relevant for travellers arriving on late-night or early-morning flights at Newcastle Airport who previously faced limited transport options once rental desks closed.
The fleet consists of late-model MGs which are maintained using waterless detailing methods. This eco-friendly approach aligns with a broader shift toward sustainable business practices within the local transport sector.
The business currently holds an All-Star Host status on the Turo marketplace and has secured more than 100 five-star reviews from local and corporate users. Following the rollout at the airport and interchange, Sujay is now planning further expansion into the northern suburbs.
By leveraging smartphone-unlock technology, the network provides a skip the counter experience for tourists and professionals. As the Hunter continues to position itself as a hub for innovation and smart city technology, the transition to fully digital vehicle access reflects the changing expectations of regional travellers.
