Newcastle Business Club luncheon to help combat workplace stress and mental-health issues

Burnout and stress are now the largest causes of mental-health issues in the workplace.

To help local businesses promote mental wellbeing and decrease stress in the workplace, Newcastle Business Club’s October Luncheon will present keynote speaker, Psychologist, David Burroughs.

Held on Tuesday, 16 October 2018 – in the midst of Mental Health Month – at Harbourview Function Centre, David will share his experience in early intervention and prevention of mental-ill health in the workplace.

With a diverse career working across areas organisational, clinical and military psychology, David is a trusted advisor for executive teams for many leading organisations across the Asia Pacific, and is a regular speaker both here and internationally.

Newcastle Business Club President, Holly Martin said small to large businesses and solopreneurs should have a framework in place to limit stress and support employee wellbeing.

“While businesses can have good intentions, if management or employees aren’t equipped to respond to an emerging mental health issue in the workplace, the result can be costly to both the individual and the business,” Holly said.

“Mental health within and outside of the workplace is an important issue in Newcastle and the Hunter region, so we’re really looking forward to sharing some insight into the steps businesses can take to better support their employees.”

Developing strategies for a healthy workplace can help businesses to promote mental wellbeing, minimise workplace risks to mental health, support people experiencing mental health issues and reduce stigma associated with mental health conditions.

David will talk about the practicalities of a mentally healthy workplace, looking beyond awareness and statistics and focusing on the role of the workplace in mental health and how to support people’s mental health – the basics of having a conversation and demystifying the notion of mental health.

Newcastle Business Club is presenting the Luncheon in partnership with their sponsors, Westpac and Everymind.

Jaelea Skehan, Everymind Director said that for many people they spend more time at work than anywhere else so what happens at work can be important to their overall wellbeing.

“The good news is that there is a positive influence of work on people’s wellbeing – it provides financial resources, a sense of purpose and facilitates social connections. But, the workplace can also have a negative impact on our wellbeing, with workplace stress, job insecurity, job demands and poor social support at work increasing the risk of mental ill-health,” Jaelea said.

“There has been a lot of “talk” in this area, but often businesses, large and small, can be confused about what really makes a difference and practical steps they can take that will best support themselves and their staff and show a return to the business.”

“David has extensive experience in this area, and a practical head on his shoulders, so I think this will be a great event for our local businesses.”
