Daracon Group cadet, Amilija Drazina, has been announced as a finalist in the Ghella University Scholarship category at the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) NSW 2025 Excellence Awards. The awards recognise achievements by women, businesses and allies across the construction sector, with finalists representing progress and inclusivity in the industry across New South Wales.
Amilija joined Daracon Group in 2024 through the Daracon Casual Labour Pool and gained site experience on the Hexham Straight Widening Project before transitioning into a cadet role. In the second year, Amilija balances undergraduate study while contributing to civil construction projects across the Hunter.
Encouraged in high school by a parent who worked in construction and an Engineering Teacher, Amilija pursued engineering at the University of Newcastle. After gaining site experience, Amilija recognised the role surveying plays in delivery and expanded studies to a double degree in Engineering and Surveying.
Since joining Daracon as a labourer, Amilija received workplace support for a hearing impairment. Daracon arranged a workplace assessment with an audiologist to assist with the noisy environment. Amilija used a rechargeable microphone that connects to hearing aids, allowing colleagues to clip it on during conversations, and has phone connectivity to improve communication.
Amilija says the support helps with adapting at work.
“My colleagues have been incredibly supportive – they’ve embraced using the microphone and always make sure to face me when speaking, which really helps. I’ve been open about my hearing loss, and working through these solutions together has been a positive experience all-round,” Amilija says.
Senior HR Specialist, Compliance, Diversity and Inclusion, Emma Morson, nominated Amilija and says the recognition reflects inclusive practices.
“We are proud to see Amilija recognised as a finalist in the 2025 NAWIC NSW Excellence Awards. Her journey reflects the importance of building inclusive and diverse workplaces and highlights the strong support for women within the construction sector,” Emma says.
Emma says Amilija demonstrates determination and a strong work ethic.
“Amilija pushes boundaries and approaches every challenge with determination, a positive attitude and strong work ethic. This recognition is well deserved for someone as dedicated and resilient as they are,” Emma says.
Winners are scheduled to be announced at ICC Sydney on Thursday, 13 November 2025.
