Committee for the Hunter appoints inaugural CEO

Following a national search, the Committee for the Hunter has appointed Alice Thompson as its inaugural Chief Executive Officer.

Alice Thompson has held executive positions most recently with global professional services firm KPMG, and has worked across all levels of government, including as senior policy advisor to former Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull and as Director of Economic Policy in the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Committee Chair, Richard Anicich AM, said Alice was a public policy leader with significant experience and expertise in the key areas of infrastructure, industry development and attraction, urban planning and regional development.

“Ms Thompson has a strong track record in the design and delivery of complex policy, programs and projects in both Labor and Coalition governments. Contributing to her success is a proven ability to coordinate and build partnerships across governments, the community and private sectors,” Richard said.

Alice said she was excited to have been appointed the inaugural CEO, and looked forward to building the capabilities and capacity of the Committee to be a powerful and effective advocate for the region.

“The businesses, communities and institutions of the Hunter have a strong understanding of their importance to the economy, what this region needs to grow and the potential to show leadership on the big challenges and opportunities this nation faces,” Alice said.

“I will build the partnerships between the Board, Committee members, governments, and the private and community sectors that will be critical in more effective advocacy for the Hunter and unlocking the investment that this fast-growing region deserves,” she said.

Richard said that with her unique skills, experience and networks, Alice would quickly make a major contribution to the work of the Committee for the Hunter and the development of the region.

Alice had a key role in new approaches to regional development. This includes the ambitious Western Sydney City Deal that saw eight councils partner with the Commonwealth and NSW governments in a long-term plan for jobs, skills and training, international investment, better transport and liveability.

“I look forward to bringing my experience from the collaborative thinking, planning and investment that is being tested and getting results in Western Sydney to the Hunter,” Alice said.

The Committee for the Hunter was first established in 2018 and significantly expanded in 2019.

Its vision is to be an independent and inclusive champion for the people of the Hunter and their enterprises, providing effective advocacy and thought leadership to help build a sustainable and prosperous future for the region.

Alice Thompson will commence as the inaugural CEO in March 2020.
