Clyde St Arts is establishing a monthly repair cafe in Hamilton North to encourage the local community to fix broken items rather than contributing to landfill. Launching on Friday, 1 May 2026, the initiative pairs residents with skilled volunteers to repair electronics, textiles, furniture and bicycles.
The program arrives as electronic waste continues to be Australia’s fastest-growing waste stream. The 2025 Australian Repair Summit highlighted the importance of the right to repair movement, a shift that community-led initiatives in the Hunter are now bringing into a practical, local context.
The repair cafe operates on a collaborative model where visitors work alongside repairers. Rather than a traditional drop-off service, the focus is on skill sharing and observation, allowing participants to build technical confidence they can apply to future household repairs.
The project draws on a network of local collaborators including Upcycle Newcastle, SparkHaus, Reclaimed Commons, The Full Circle Collective and The Creator Incubator. Technical expertise is also provided by the Newcastle Bicycle Workshop and hospitality waste consultant Bec Bowie.
Leanna Pugliese of SparkHaus said repairing an object changes how a person views its value.
“It is not just about fixing what is broken. It is about building confidence, sharing knowledge and creating a culture where we value what we have,” Leanna said.
“When people repair something themselves, even with guidance, it empowers them to keep items in use for longer.”
The initiative supports the transition toward a circular economy by keeping materials in use through creative repurposing. This includes a deconstruction program led by Co-founder of Resourceful Living, Jess Hodge, where younger participants can learn to dismantle plastic toys to understand how they are constructed.
Located at 50 Clyde Street, the event also features the Piratti Bakery food truck and an open gallery showcasing art from The Creator Incubator. By combining technical repair with a social environment, the organisers aim to make sustainability accessible to a broader cross-section of the Newcastle community.
The repair cafe will run from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on the first Friday of each month. Registrations for specific items intended for repair open on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, to allow the concierge team to match items with the appropriate specialist.
