Maitland City Council has introduced a new Outdoor Dining Policy to simplify the permit process for hospitality businesses following the conclusion of the state-led Service NSW trial. The policy introduces a digital permit system through the MyCouncil platform, designed to reduce approval times for cafes, restaurants and bars looking to expand their footprint onto public footpaths.
The move aligns with the NSW Government Vibrancy Reforms and the recently launched Maitland Economic Development Strategy. As part of the rollout, council will waive the one-off $145 application fee for the next six months to encourage businesses to transition to the new system or establish new outdoor areas.
Maitland Mayor, Philip Penfold said the policy provides a framework for businesses to cater to more customers while ensuring public spaces remain accessible.
“Outdoor dining adds life to our streets and gives the community more opportunities to enjoy our local hospitality sector,” Philip said.
“Businesses can now set up outdoor dining more easily while council ensures public spaces remain safe for everyone.”
The policy sets out requirements for public liability insurance, pedestrian clearance and liquor licensing compliance. By centralising the process through a local platform, council intends to provide a faster response to the hospitality industry than the previous state-led program.
Director of City Planning, Trevor Ryan said the approach provides a practical framework that supports more liveable precincts across the city.
“This approach supports local hospitality and will help create more vibrant precincts across Maitland,” Trevor said.
The simplified process is expected to benefit businesses throughout the Maitland CBD and suburban hubs like Lorn and East Maitland. By reducing red tape, the initiative aims to increase foot traffic and support the long-term growth of the city’s night-time and weekend economies.
Detailed requirements for the new permit system and the introductory fee waiver are available through the council website.
