The University of Newcastle has appointed groundwater scientist Professor Craig Simmons as its new Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation following a global recruitment process. Craig, who has served as Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university’s College of Engineering, Science and Environment since 2022, will lead the institution’s commercial research translation and international development strategies.

In addition to his academic portfolio, Craig concurrently serves as the Chief Scientist for South Australia. His executive background includes terms as Executive Director at the Australian Research Council overseeing physical and earth sciences, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research at Flinders University, and Foundation Director of the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, Professor Alex Zelinsky said the executive appointment is tied to the delivery of the university’s Looking Ahead 2030 strategic plan.

“Professor Simmons is an outstanding research leader whose career exemplifies both academic excellence and real-world impact,” Alex said.

“His deep experience across science, policy and innovation makes him exceptionally well placed to lead the next phase of the University’s research and innovation strategy as part of Looking Ahead 2030. Professor Simmons has an impressive track record of building high-performing teams and delivering research outcomes that address complex global challenges, and I am delighted to welcome him to this critical leadership role.”

Craig’s scientific contributions include serving as a lead author on the United Nations World Water Development Report and as a contributing author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment Report. He holds fellowships with the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.

In his new capacity, Craig will oversee the university’s research infrastructure, venture commercialisation, and industry partnership frameworks.

“The University of Newcastle has a strong and growing reputation for research excellence and meaningful community impact,” Craig said.

“I am excited to work with colleagues and partners to strengthen our research performance, foster innovation, and translate our discoveries into real-world outcomes that benefit our region and the world. Together, we have an opportunity to build on existing strengths and position the University as a leader in addressing the critical challenges of our time.”

The appointment comes as regional universities face increased commercial pressure to align academic output with industrial decarbonisation, regional water security, and advanced manufacturing demands across the Hunter.
