The annual Maitland Blacks Charity Day has raised nearly $12,000 to fund community inclusion, skill-building, and employment initiatives managed by Mai-Wel across the Hunter region. Held at Marcellin Park in Lorn, the event coincided with Round 6 of the Hunter Rugby competition and secured widespread participation from regional businesses, sports families, and local residents.
The fundraising campaign featured a series of community initiatives, including a charity jersey auction, structured raffle competitions, and a half-time on-field sports activation involving both club players and service participants. The funds generated are allocated directly to support programmes that target local workforce entry barriers and community connectivity for regional participants.
Chief Executive Officer of Mai-Wel, John Cleary said the corporate and athletic partnership demonstrates the economic and social value of localized community backing.
“To see the community come together in such a meaningful way was incredibly special. The energy throughout the day reflected what can happen when communities back inclusion and opportunity,” John said.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Maitland Blacks Rugby Club, the players who ran out in the jerseys showcasing Mai-Wel indigenous artwork, and everyone who got behind the success of the day.”
A central element of the match day involved the Maitland rugby team competing in custom jerseys designed with custom Indigenous artwork representing Mai-Wel’s regional footprint. These limited-edition strips were subsequently auctioned off to local supporters post-match to drive the final fundraising total.
Senior Manager – Engagement at Mai-Wel, Belinda McNab noted that local retail and corporate contributions underpinned the operational success of the day’s activities.
“We sold every single Spin the Wheel prize, the 100 Club had huge support and the jersey auction created plenty of excitement throughout the afternoon,” Belinda said.
“To raise close to $12,000 in a single day is an incredible outcome, and every dollar raised will help support the people we work alongside every day across our region.”
Commercial operations and local hospitality venues across Maitland, Rutherford, and Bolwarra contributed merchandise and service vouchers to fund the fundraising draws, strengthening the cross-sector collaboration between local sports clubs, regional business houses, and community services.
