Daracon Group plant operator, Tim Lamb has finished as the sixth-best operator in the world at the Cat Global Operator Challenge finals in Las Vegas. The achievement at the North American construction event, CONEXPO marks a milestone for operating excellence on a global stage.
Tim’s ranking follows a journey that began at the NSW heats and progressed through a win at the NSW state final hosted by WesTrac. He continued to a third-place podium finish at the Asia Pacific regional final in Japan where he also earned the Excavator Champion title.
Daracon Group Plant and Transport Divisional Manager, Cory Hay said the achievement is a special moment for the company and Australian operators.
“Tim’s dedication, calm nature under pressure and technical precision reflect the way we invest in people and equipment every day,” Cory said.
“We’re incredibly proud of Tim’s sixth place in the global rankings and the broader team who supported his preparation.”
Tim said he still found the result difficult to believe after a year of competition.
“I’m just a guy from Newcastle who comes to work each day to do a job I love. This time last year I was just happy to have a crack at the WesTrac NSW heats,” Tim said.
“Standing on the ground in Las Vegas at the Global Operator Challenge is truly unbelievable.”
Cory said Daracon Group (DG) believes that extraordinary things happen when passionate people are paired with the right training and technology.
“Tim getting to Las Vegas is a testament to that belief and to the teamwork across DG, our partners at WesTrac and Caterpillar, and the broader civil construction industry,” Cory said.
Tim is an example of the talent emerging from the Hunter region and the Australian civil construction sector. Billions of dollars of infrastructure spend is being invested in major projects across the region with backing from all levels of government and private investment.
The Cat Global Operator Challenge is regarded as the ultimate test of machine control, efficiency and safety. It places elite operators under high-pressure, precision-based tasks in front of a global audience.
The Best Operator in the World was named as Brian Hayden from the USA. Brian received a trophy and a 10,000 USD prize.
WesTrac Chief Executive NSW/ACT, Adrian Howard said competitions like this play an important role in highlighting industry opportunities.
“We thank Caterpillar for delivering a world-class event that showcases both the performance of Cat equipment and the professionalism of operators worldwide,” Adrian said.
“It encourages the next generation to pursue careers in earthmoving and construction.”
