Newcastle Airport commenced direct Jetstar flights to Bali, marking the airport’s first regular international leisure service from the Hunter region.
The route launched on Thursday 23 October 2025, with three flights a week operating between Newcastle and Denpasar. The service was expected to carry more than 70,000 seats annually, providing a closer international option for residents across the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast and Northern Sydney.
“The launch continued recent growth in services and aligned with strong demand from the region” said Linc Horton, Newcastle Airport CEO.
“The airport has introduced direct services to Perth, Hobart and Bali over the last six months, and airline feedback indicated the routes were performing above expectations”, said Linc.
Linc said the Bali connection would open opportunities for future international routes and strengthen ties with Indonesia.
Port Stephens Mayor and Newcastle Airport Director, Leah Anderson was on the inaugural flight and said “the route was an important step for regional connectivity. The airport’s $250 million expansion was unlocking opportunities for tourism, business, investment and jobs, and would make the Hunter a more attractive destination for visitors”.
The inaugural services were attended by local media and business leaders, including Triple M breakfast hosts Tanya and Steve, NBN Newcastle, and Business Hunter CEO, Bob Hawes.
“The direct route supported the tourism sector and created new opportunities for trade and regional business,” Bob said.
Beyond tourism, stakeholders noted potential benefits in export, education and defence links. With rising Indonesian interest in Australian wine and fresh produce, Hunter Valley producers were expected to find it easier to build commercial ties with Southeast Asia.
The University of Newcastle welcomed improved access to Indonesia as a key market for international students and research collaboration, supporting outbound programs under initiatives such as the New Colombo Plan.
