Hunter TAFE Foundation scholarships and awards presented to students

The Hunter TAFE Foundation Semester One presentation was held recently, announcing 40 deserving TAFE NSW students across the Hunter and Central Coast regions who received $30,500 worth of scholarships and awards.

Hunter TAFE Foundation President, Karen Howard said this round of scholarships and awards were well deserved and reflected a great deal of persistence and talent from local TAFE NSW students.

“Each year, I am even more amazed to see the strength, resilience and determination that TAFE NSW students demonstrate in reaching their goals and future careers. It’s a great honour for us to play a part in this journey.”

“It is with the ongoing support of our generous and loyal donors that the Hunter TAFE Foundation can continue to assist students from a diverse range of backgrounds to successfully complete their studies, enter the workforce or enhance their career pathway,” Karen said.

TAFE NSW Executive Director, Jason Darney said to be able to support students and equip them with the resources to build fulfilling careers is just one step they are proud to be able to take in another’s lifelong journey.

“TAFE NSW is proud to equip students with real-world practical skills and experience so they can hit the ground running in the workplace,” Jason said.

“Through the support of the Hunter TAFE Foundation, I am pleased to see so many local students receiving the support they need to progress and achieve their career goals.”

The Semester One, 2023 Hunter TAFE Foundation scholarships and awards were presented on Wednesday, 21 June at TAFE NSW Kurri Kurri to students studying a range of courses from Certificates to Higher Education qualifications.

The recipients were recognised by the Hunter TAFE Foundation for their achievements, resilience, and commitment to further education.

TAFE NSW Hunter Street Certificate IV in Screen and Media student, Riley Mellis, received the Pride Scholarship as part of the inaugural City of Newcastle, Lord Mayors Inclusion Scholarship Program.

“The support of the scholarship will help me out immensely, as I give up hours at work to focus on my studies and volunteer on film shoots to gain further experience to pursue a career in the film and television industry,” Riley said.

Riley advocates for diversity in the film industry and hopes to continue to support others in the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Hunter TAFE Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation working with business, education, and community leaders to support education and training at TAFE NSW in the Hunter and Central Coast region.

Established in 2000, the Hunter TAFE Foundation has a rich history in the region, having evolved from the Newcastle Technical and Further Education Committee Trust Fund, which received its first donation in 1936 to provide skills for employment.

Fast forward to today, the Foundation provides financial support to TAFE NSW students in the Hunter and Central Coast who are experiencing either personal or financial hardship, assisting them in completing their studies.
