Business event to look at disruption and competition

Newcastle Business Club will play host to a panel of speakers from a locally-based organisation that is working hard to respond to industry disruption and competition.

Club President, Jo Bright, said that the Club was pleased to present a panel of speakers from Greater Bank, to give an insight into their strategy for business.

“The panel will share frank insights into the drivers and implementation of their change from a management and Board perspective,” Jo said. “There will be valuable lessons and discussion starters for other local business people.”

“The Greater, now Greater Bank, is a successful Newcastle and Hunter business with a proud history in our community. It will be refreshing to hear from one of our own on the very relevant topic of disruption and change.”

The panel will consist of Greater Bank CEO Scott Morgan, Chairman Wayne Russell (and partner at business advisory firm Pitcher Partners) and Greater Bank’s Head of People And Process Transformation Marie Hanson-Kentwell. The panel will discuss the lessons from Greater Bank’s approach for other regional businesses facing competition and disruption. It will be facilitated by media personality and interviewer Garth Russell.

Scott says the name change from Greater Building Society to Greater Bank is a small part of broader change the organisation is making to remain relevant to customers, win market share from the dominant big banks, and meet the challenge from a growing number of disruptors.

“Hunter businesses can no longer remain isolated in our region, doing things as we have always done them,” Scott said.

“Hunter businesses need to continuously change in the face of increased competition and disruption as well as changing needs and expectations from customers. Greater Bank’s changes are driven by analysis of customer and business need, not change for changes sake or to be up with the latest trend.”

While Greater Bank is matching the big banks in elements of digital banking, he says technology is one area where he cautions regional businesses need to have a strong understanding of customer need and benefit before rushing in to major budget breaking technology investments.
