The University of Newcastle has appointed global technology executive and aerospace specialist Dr William (Bill) Lyons as Pro Vice-Chancellor Industry and Engagement. Commencing in the executive role on 28 September 2026, Bill brings over 30 years of commercial experience across aerospace, advanced manufacturing, defense, research commercialisation and sustainability.

In his new appointment, Bill will oversee the university’s industry partnership network, research commercialisation strategies and innovation precinct developments across the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

Bill joins the university from commercial consulting firm Arriva Advisors. Prior to that, he spent 27 years with The Boeing Company in senior executive roles, including Senior Executive Director of Enterprise Technology Strategy, Capabilities and Partnerships, where he directed Boeing’s global university research partnerships and multi-billion-dollar technology investments across artificial intelligence, digital engineering and autonomous systems. His background also includes co-founding the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.

Bill holds a PhD in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Queensland, an Executive MBA in Leadership from Seattle University, and first-class honours degrees in Computer Science and Atmospheric Science from James Cook University.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, Professor Alex Zelinsky stated that the appointment strengthens the institution’s ability to translate academic research into industrial capability.

“Dr Bill Lyons is a globally respected leader who has spent his career building powerful connections between research, industry and innovation,” Alex said.

“His track record in developing international partnerships, commercialising technology and leading large-scale innovation ecosystems makes him well placed to help advance our strategic priorities. Dr Lyons’ experience and networks will help us create new opportunities for our students, researchers, industry partners and our communities.”
