As one of the fastest growing regional economies in Australia, Maitland is at the forefront of change. Which is likely why there was a stellar turnout for the recent Maitland Business Chamber event with Dr Amanda Cahill from The Next Economy.
She discussed the transformation of our local and wider economy as we approach net zero emissions, and the ways that other regional areas are developing plans and strategies to reduce carbon emissions, but also create positive social and economic outcomes.
Dr Cahill is frequently consulted by governments from the highest level of our Federal Government to local councils like Maitland. Her work aims to effectively manage the transition from fossil fuel based economic prosperity to alternate sources of economic wellbeing.
As part of her presentation she talked with chamber members and guests about the need for leadership and proactivity as the Maitland and wider Hunter community faces the challenges ahead.
“My ongoing focus is on helping regions grow resilience and creative thinking to regional populations facing rapid change due to the transition taking place in our nation’s energy industry,” Amanda said.
“We want to inspire the public to act by raising awareness about the range of solutions available to tackle climate change and regenerate the environment while creating a more prosperous, cohesive and peaceful society.”
Maitland Business Chamber President, Shane Hamilton said this event was a necessary one for the Maitland and wider community.
“It was really great for Amanda to bring this experience to Maitland. I know myself, the businesses and stakeholders who attended really appreciated her time. There was a subsequent discussion around appropriate timelines and the role our local business will need to play,” Shane said.
CEO of The Mutual Bank, Geoff Seccombe is a past Executive Committee Member of the Chamber, and respected Maitland business figure, who was there to support this important message as a Gold Sponsor.
“The Mutual Bank was founded by a group of passionate Maitland businesspeople in 1888, and it has been here to help people thrive for more than a century. The Mutual Bank specialises in supporting local business owners to achieve their goals and we are pleased to have been able to support this important event for the region,” Geoff said.
Chief Marketer at The Marketing GP, Holly Martin said it can be difficult to know what role to play in big discussions, but that being part of the conversation is vital and was why they wanted to sponsor.
“It’s easier to feel like issues like this are too hard, but it’s about each of us playing our own part in the change,” Holly said.
The event was followed by the Maitland Business Chamber AGM where a new board was announced.
