Hunter-based financial adviser Paul Howden has been awarded the Astrum Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising a career spanning more than 30 years in the professional services sector. The award celebrates individuals who have demonstrated sustained leadership and contributed to the structural development of the financial advice industry.
As a co-founder of Crest Financial Services more than 25 years ago, Paul was instrumental in expanding the firm’s footprint across Newcastle and Maitland. His tenure has seen the business navigate significant regulatory reform and technological shifts, evolving from a boutique practice into a multidisciplinary firm offering integrated financial and accounting services.
Paul said the recognition reflects the collective efforts of his colleagues and long-term clients.
“I feel incredibly honoured to receive this recognition,” Paul said. “It has been a privilege to work in an industry where you can make a real difference in people’s lives. This award is also a reflection of the many people I have worked with over the years, including our team and our clients, who have all been part of this journey.”
Beyond firm management, Paul’s influence on the regional workforce is evidenced by his focus on mentorship. Throughout his career, he has overseen the professional development of numerous advisers and paraplanners, many of whom have transitioned into senior leadership roles.
Director and adviser at Crest, Jessica Deamer, who began her career at the firm as a paraplanner, said Paul’s leadership style has been foundational to the organisation’s culture.
“Paul’s impact on both our team and the broader profession has been remarkable,” Jessica said. “He has always led by example, supporting people to grow, encouraging high standards, and putting clients at the centre of every decision. His influence can be seen in the culture we have today.”
Paul’s contribution to the industry also includes a previous tenure on the ARA board during a period of sector-wide transformation. Locally, he has maintained a focus on professional collaboration, hosting conferences and investing in continuous learning for staff to meet evolving industry standards.
The Astrum Lifetime Achievement Award is reserved for advisers who demonstrate innovation and service excellence. As the financial sector continues to face rising professional standards, Paul’s career serves as a benchmark for regional practitioners balanced between business growth and community advocacy.
