Newcastle communications professional and filmmaker Andy Meier has received the Best Screen Writer award at the 2026 Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival for his five-minute documentary, An Accidental Artist. Now in its 18th year, the international competition attracted 400 film submissions from 26 countries to highlight the lives, creative achievements, and lived experiences of people with disability.
The award-winning short film documents the story of Central Coast artist William “Bil” Anderson Jr, whose artistic abilities developed after surviving a traumatic brain injury and emerging from a prolonged coma. The documentary examines Bil’s emergence as a visual artist producing intricate works inspired by Aboriginal Quinkan figures, exploring the neurological phenomenon of Acquired Savant Syndrome through a personal, empathetic lens.
Andy produced the film drawing on a multidisciplinary background in creative direction, graphic design, photography, video production and strategic marketing communications. In addition to operating his consultancy Strategic Minds Communications, he serves as Marketing and Communications Lead at Newcastle-based brain injury support provider Headstart ABI Services, using visual storytelling to challenge community perceptions surrounding disability and traumatic brain injury.
Screenwriter, director, and Marketing and Communications Lead at Headstart ABI Services, Andy Meier stated that documentary storytelling bridges technical facts and lived human experiences.
“Stories are powerful, and it’s not every day we hear of a story like Bil’s,” Andy said.
“I’m always looking out for the untold story, and Bil’s was waiting for an opportunity to be crafted. Documentary screenwriting is about shaping real-life events and stories into a compelling narrative. I’m thrilled to receive this recognition for that aspect of my work among so many inspiring stories and talented filmmakers. What I love most is seeing how art has become a way for Bil to express himself, connect with others, and give people a glimpse into his world. What makes this festival so important is that it gives people with disabilities the opportunity to share their stories, challenge perceptions and helps us see the person beyond the disability.”
