The Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary has partnered with Wild Light Experiences to launch a niche wellness program, aiming to capture a share of the growing slow travel market. The initiative, titled Wild Light Immersion, is a two-night midweek retreat designed to leverage the region’s natural assets to address increasing consumer demand for wellness-focused tourism.
The partnership arrives as the Australian travel sector sees a shift toward experiences that prioritised mental restoration and nature-based activity over traditional sightseeing. By utilising the sanctuary’s elevated Skywalk for sunrise meditation and yoga, the program integrates the local koala habitat into a commercial wellness offering.
Assistant Manager at Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary, Melinda Atkinson said the experience is a response to a documented need for screen-free, restorative environments.
“People are seeking space to pause,” Melinda said.
“This experience is about stepping out of the everyday and into a quieter environment where nature facilitates the restoration process.”
The program includes guided koala tours and access to the sanctuary’s bushland, positioning the facility as more than a traditional wildlife viewing site. For the sanctuary, the partnership provides a way to increase midweek occupancy and diversify its revenue streams through high-value, low-impact tourism.
Founder of Wild Light Experiences, Tammy Kelly said the retreat’s design focuses on regulating the nervous system through mindful movement and stillness.
“Our approach is to create space for people to slow down,” Tammy said.
“When you combine movement and nature, there is a shift in clarity. Guests leave feeling more grounded and connected to the environment.”
The Wild Light Immersion is being trialled across three limited midweek windows in April and May 2026. With a focus on small group sizes, the initiative reflects a broader regional strategy to develop intimate, high-quality alternatives to large-scale wellness resorts.
The collaboration between a conservation-focused facility and a wellness provider highlights a growing trend in the Hunter’s visitor economy, where environmental education and personal wellbeing services are being combined to create new bookable products.
