Newcastle Property Manager at the forefront of major tenancy laws.

Starting next week some of the most significant changes to tenancy laws will come into effect in NSW.

For the past two years Michelle McLean, Senior Property Manager and Compliance Manager at Leah Jay, has played a crucial role in negotiating with government bodies as the changes were being formulated.

She has been instrumental in steering the committee on important industry issues, including the recent review of legislative changes to the Residential Tenancy Act.

Michelle admits that the process however hasn’t been an easy one.

“It’s been tough. It’s been busy. But I’m really pleased with what we’ve achieved, given what it could have been,” she said.

“After being elected as Chair of the Property Management Chapter for the Real Estate Institute of NSW in 2017, I went into the process aiming to achieve fair outcomes for both owners and tenants. And I think we got there.”

With the introduction of new legislation, Michelle is now eager to educate her Leah Jay team on the developments.

“As you would expect, the team at Leah Jay are across the changes. Now it’s about us helping owners and tenants understand what it means for them,” she said.

“A lot of it is about providing greater clarity to existing regulations, but there are others, including smoke alarms and water efficiencies, that will require adjustment by owners and tenants.”

In recognition of Michelle’s efforts, she recently received the John Hill Award, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the industry and was re-elected in her role as Chair.

The Award is presented to a Chapter Chair in recognition of the outstanding contribution they have made to their chapter.

Cassandra Lantry, Director and Operations Manager at Leah Jay said that Michelle deserves all the praise and acknowledgment for the consistent hard work she has put in over the past few years.

“You can’t overstate the significance of Michelle’s work over the last two years. The recognition is there but the affect for our clients will play out for years to come,” Cassandra said.

“We’re extremely proud of Michelle, her level of expertise in these matters illustrates how vested we are as the industry leaders in Property Management.”
