New Lifeline shop in Morisset helps fund local suicide prevention services

Lifeline will be opening its 10th new shop in the region, with a new location in Morisset set to open on Thursday, 23 June.

Proceeds from all shop purchases will be used to help fund local suicide prevention services.

Lifeline calls are currently up 25 per cent with the community struggling with the impacts of COVID-19 and flooding.

Lifeline’s Area Manager of its Newcastle and Central Coast shops, Renee Moir is getting the new store ready for open day.

“Op shopping is the budget friendly and environmentally friendly way to buy something for yourself or as a gift. By buying our items, shoppers are giving them new life and preventing them from going to landfill.

“Many people don’t realise that local Lifeline centres rely on proceeds from its shops to help fund local contributions to the 13 11 14 service and other local services such as free face to face counselling.

“Lifeline shops run thanks to the support of local volunteers and donations of quality preloved goods from local people, Renee said.”

The new shop is Lifeline’s third in Lake Macquarie and takes its total number of Hunter shops to 10. A new shop in East Maitland opened in April.

The other shops are in Cardiff, Hamilton North, Maitland, Nelson Bay, Raymond Terrace, Singleton, Toronto, and Wallsend.

Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter

Lifeline was founded by the Reverend Alan Walker at Methodist Central Mission in Sydney in 1963. Since then, Lifeline services have been established around Australia and in many parts of the world.

Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter began in 1966 when Reverend John Chegwidden was awakened by a distressed telephone call from a man wanting to know if there was a Lifeline service operating in the region.

Over the years, Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter has expanded its operations from the traditional telephone crisis support service to include a range of services to relieve the stress and pain of the people of Newcastle & Hunter.
