Maitland City Council is asking residents to have their say on the city’s first-ever Community Infrastructure Strategy (CIS), which will guide community infrastructure development and management over the next 20 years.

The CIS will be used to identify priority projects and inform Council’s decision-making when it comes to planning, funding, and delivering community infrastructure for the future.

Maitland City Council General Manager Jeff Smith says it’s “vital the community provides feedback to ensure Council meets the city’s long-term needs.”

“Maitland is a growing city, home to some ageing infrastructure built for a different era with a different purpose in mind and is no longer meeting the community’s needs,” Mr Smith said.

“The CIS will allow us to take stock of these assets, identify areas for improvement, and highlight key infrastructure projects to support our rapidly growing population.”

Community infrastructure includes buildings, open spaces, and services Council has responsibility for, plays a role in delivering, or advocates for, on behalf of the community.

The CIS will look at 10 key categories of community infrastructure, including aquatic facilities, playspaces, local libraries and museums, community facilities, Maitland Regional Art Gallery and public art, public open spaces, outdoor recreation facilities, indoor sports facilities, outdoor sports facilities, and public toilets.

Extensive consultation will take place to inform the Strategy, including several in-person pop-up sessions across Maitland, before a draft is presented to Council towards the end of 2025.

Once finalised, the Strategy will be used alongside Council’s asset management planning processes to drive future capital works programs and support both new and existing assets.
