Three Newcastle businesses came together for a good cause in May that saw them and their supporters raise more than $6,000 for asthma research.
The 5k A Day In May fundraiser is an initiative of local businesses Carnelian Projects and Inspire Property & Finance.
This year, Genesis Fitness Clubs partnered with 5k A Day In May and promoted the active campaign through its network of 10 gyms.
1 in 10 Australians are living with asthma and all funds from 5k A Day In May will go to Asthma Australia to ensure they can continue their vital research.
First-hand experience of living with asthma inspired Kerri-Ann Hooper of Carnelian Projects to create the month-long fundraising event.
“My son Cameron has had asthma from a very young age. His condition has meant we’ve spent lots of time at the doctor’s surgery and in hospital too. Advances in modern medicine have allowed us to manage his asthma better but there is still a long way to go,” Kerri-Ann said.
“This year’s fundraising effort is outstanding but we’re planning to top it next year.”
Kerri-Ann’s husband Wade Hooper of Inspire Property & Finance lived with asthma in his childhood and knows that exercise is an important part of asthma management.
“5k A Day In May has been such a great motivation for my family and me to exercise daily. We all enjoyed watching the sunrise over the ocean. I’m planning to continue my May routine and walk most mornings now,” Wade said.
“This year, the involvement of Genesis Fitness Clubs allowed us to spread the message further. I think Genesis did a really great job of involving their members in the campaign and I thank them for that.”
John Pirlo, Managing Director of Genesis Fitness Clubs said he and his team were really proud to have been part of 5k A Day in May.
“We had thousands of members involved and even my three kids did five kilometres each day. Initiatives like this will shape how we manage asthma in the future. We look forward to growing 5k A Day In May in the following years,” John said.
