Knowledge is Power: TAFE NSW up-skills Newcastle City council

As Australians adapt to increasingly fast-paced, technology-fuelled and KPI-focused work environments, Newcastle City Council is riding the wave by engaging TAFE NSW to upskill more than 20 staff in Leadership and Management.

According to the Association for Talent Development, companies which offer comprehensive training programs have 218% higher income per employee than companies without formalised training.

Newcastle City is one of several councils working with TAFE NSW along the Central Coast to Far North Coast NSW region to better equip staff to excel in today’s workplace.

Councils are undertaking a wide range of training and professional development across skill areas including project management, construction and digital literacy.

The six-month Newcastle City Council training is being delivered at TAFE NSW Newcastle and is nearing completion, with council staff expected to be completed by June 2019.

As Australia’s largest training provider, TAFE NSW is providing expert industry trainers to deliver Leadership and Management training tailored to the Council’s business operations.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said this is a fantastic opportunity for staff to broaden their skillset.

“The TAFE NSW qualification will equip managers with the capabilities to lead, engage and motivate staff so that they can deliver the best services possible to the City of Newcastle,” she said.

“We are an organisation committed to attracting and retaining high-quality staff by providing them with the skills and training necessary to progress and advance through their career.

“We foster an environment where staff can learn from experienced, passionate professionals in an enthusiastic and enjoyable workplace.”

“It is great to be able to call on the resources of a large education service provider such as TAFE NSW to continue our efforts in being the best organisation we can be.”

TAFE NSW Regional Manager, Susie George said TAFE NSW is thrilled to be working with Newcastle City Council to deliver this specialised Leadership and Management training.

“TAFE NSW caters to the individual needs of businesses and organisations to deliver the unique training they need. Continued skills advancement is critical in today’s workforce; for an organisation to continue evolving, individuals need to constantly learn and grow,” Ms. George said.

Although TAFE NSW are delivering this particular training rollout via face-to-face training, courses such as these can also be studied online, when and where it suits students, via TAFE Digital.”
