Jupiter launches to provide a safe space for youth

Continuing its strong tradition of mental health advocacy work in the region, Newcastle-based creative agency Headjam has collaborated with charity Caring for our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) to improve access to counselling services for young people.

Thanks to a $53, 000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, two rooms in Tomaree Library have been transformed into a safe space for young people aged between 12 and 18 years old, where they’ll have access to free counselling.

Headjam provided the inspiration for the service’s new look, which has been named Jupiter.

Headjam Principal, Luke Kellett said the name seemed perfect.

“Naming any organisation is difficult, but Jupiter has been used for centuries to navigate around the globe, it’s one of the brightest lights in the sky, and we thought it was a good beacon for youth to be drawn to,” Luke said.

President of COPSY, John De Ridder said the charity was founded five years ago due to a lack of services in Port Stephens that provided a space for young people to talk about challenges they may be facing.

COPSY approached Headjam to help get the new service off the ground.

“Headjam was great and came up with the Jupiter concept,” John said.

“Initially we liked COPSY, but Luke sold Jupiter to us because it appeals to young people and has tremendous meaning behind it.”

COPSY is now looking to secure government funding to help ensure the service can assist as many locals as possible.

“We also hope that local businesses will get on board once they have seen all the information about our service and understand what we hope to achieve within the community,” John said.
