Specialised training for the Hunter mining sector has received a boost following the donation of heavy machinery components to the Zeal Futures Rutherford campus. The equipment, provided by BTP, supports the Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology, a program designed to meet increasing demand for technical trades across local mining fleets.
The Hunter Valley remains the largest contributor to the New South Wales mining industry, with thousands of workers employed in maintenance and technical roles. As machinery becomes more advanced, the need for practical training on modern components is critical for regional workforce capability.
The training program was established last June through a partnership between Zeal Futures and Glencore. It provides apprentices with hands-on access to late-model components to learn diagnosis and repair techniques. The donation assists students as they transition into their second year of training where technical complexity increases.
Business Development Manager at BTP, Steve Tritten said access to authentic machinery components allows apprentices to apply theory in a practical environment.
“This builds technical competency, problem-solving capability and confidence,” Steve said.
“It is especially important in the mining industry where getting hands-on experience makes a real difference to safety and quality outcomes.”
The program at Rutherford focuses on a structural redesign of trade delivery to ensure apprentices can work with complex modern mining fleets.
Learning General Manager at Zeal Futures, Debbie Laarkamp said the facility provides an authentic heavy plant environment.
“The apprentices are training with genuine mining components made possible by the donation from BTP and Glencore,” Debbie said.
“We ensure apprentices are being trained for the realities of modern mining.”
By supporting skills-based training, partnerships between regional businesses and training providers contribute to sustainable employment pathways and long-term economic resilience across the Hunter Valley.
