HunterNet supporting local businesses in Japanese expansion

HunterNet has received funding through Austrade to support Australian businesses expanding into export markets via the existing free trade agreements between Japan, South Korea and China.

Project Director, Rena Gifford said HunterNet recently visited Japan to undertake a scoping visit to investigate the potential opportunities for businesses under the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA).

“In coordination with the Japanese Austrade Offices, we coordinated a visit to gain a better understanding of the opportunities for Australian businesses in the Japanese market,” Renae said.

The visit involved meetings with numerous importers and wholesalers. This provided an excellent opportunity to gain insights into the local market and economy which could not be gained through desktop research.

Japan is the third largest economy in the world and is one of Australia’s largest trade partners, with total exports to Japan in excess of $A45 billion annually.

“With the size of the market, coupled with the significant tariff reductions which are available through JAEPA, there are significant opportunities for Australian businesses,” Renae said.

Major commodities that are exported to Japan include beef, seafood, dairy and fresh produce.

“We identified that Australian wine is also finding its place in the market, with some importers reporting 140% growth year-on-year. Particular growth has been in the food service and restaurant sectors,” Renae said.

Japanese organisations are also seeking assistance in various services including agribusiness and defence.

“Japan has an enormous annual spend on defence and support services. The Japanese are increasingly looking for suppliers outside of their traditional supply partner, the U.S.A,” Renae said.

“In the first half of 2018 we will be taking trade missions to each of these countries. The trade missions will allow companies to identify potential export opportunities.

“Delegates will have the opportunity to meet various industry stakeholders and receive on-the-ground assistance from Austrade and it’s partners on how to successfully enter and operate in each of the markets.”

HunterNet are currently seeking expressions of interest from companies who would like part take in each of the trade missions.
