Sebastian Iannuzzi, production manager at the Hunter Valley’s Mount Eyre Vineyards, has been awarded the Vintners’ Cup after placing as the top performer globally in the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 4 Diploma in Wines. He was honoured alongside fellow Sydney Wine Academy graduate Anthony Justice, who received the Penfolds Asia Pacific Scholarship, at a recent ceremony in London.
The pair were selected from a global cohort of 714 graduates representing 45 countries. While the advanced training was undertaken through the TAFE NSW Sydney Wine Academy at Ryde, the global top achievement highlights the high calibre of technical expertise operating within the Hunter region’s wine production supply chain.
Sebastian, who spent his childhood weekends at his family’s Hunter Valley vineyard before stepping into commercial operations, said the advanced qualification has directly influenced his operational workflow at Mount Eyre Vineyards.
“Winning the Vintners’ Cup is an immense honour,” Sebastian said. “My disbelief that I won led me to reread the email several times. Standing in London to accept the cup was incredibly humbling.”
“As I progressed through the Diploma, it completely transformed how I approach wine. I apply the skills and knowledge I gained from the Diploma every day at work. It has also given me the confidence to contribute more strategically to our family business and will hold me in good stead when making future business decisions.”
Scholarship recipient Anthony Justice, who was recognised as the top-performing graduate in the Asia-Pacific region, plans to use his prize to study international viticulture in South America.
“I was delighted to win the scholarship,” Anthony said. “It provides the opportunity to study an international wine region so I’m considering travelling to Argentina. Previous study trips have been incredibly valuable in gaining a much better understanding of various aspects of the industry.”
“For now, I’ve started working as a part time Sommelier at Felix restaurant in Sydney and helping out another Diploma graduate who has a business importing wine from France and Italy.”
Certified WSET Educator at TAFE NSW, David Hickson said the international benchmark achieved by the graduates underscores the rigorous technical standards required by the global industry.
“Sebastian and Anthony exemplify the high talent of graduates emerging from the Sydney Wine Academy,” David said. “Our courses are designed to build advanced technical knowledge, tasting skills, and a strong understanding of the global wine industry, helping students develop the confidence and expertise needed to succeed in the industry.”
The global recognition of a Hunter-based production manager reinforces the region’s position as a hub for sophisticated agricultural business and premium export-grade winemaking. The WSET qualifications are recognised across more than 70 countries, making the global top ranking a significant credential for the Hunter Valley’s commercial wine sector.
