As HSC exam season approaches, Alesco Secondary College is inviting Newcastle business leaders and community members to volunteer as readers and writers, offering a chance to support students who may one day run their own businesses or lead organisations in the region.
Many Alesco students face learning difficulties or disabilities, and without support, these young people may struggle to show their full potential. Volunteering provides a unique opportunity to help them succeed and nurture the next generation of business talent.
“These students have already demonstrated resilience and determination,” said Atwea College CEO Helga Smit. “By volunteering, business leaders can give them the chance to fully demonstrate their skills, the same skills that could see them leading companies, creating jobs, and contributing to the Hunter economy in the future.”
The roles needed are:
Readers – assist students who need exam content read aloud.
Writers – support students who require someone to transcribe their answers.
No teaching experience is required, just empathy, patience, and a few hours during exam period. Flexible schedules and training are provided, and all volunteers must hold a current Working With Children Check.
“Volunteering gives leaders a firsthand look at the next wave of talent,” Helga said. “It’s about more than helping with exams, it’s an investment in the Hunter’s future workforce and business community.”
For students, the HSC is a stepping stone to further education, career opportunities, and independence. With guidance from local leaders, these students can gain confidence and skills that may one day translate into successful businesses or key roles in local industries.
“Business leaders have the chance to leave a lasting impact,” Helga added. “By giving just a few hours, you’re helping level the playing field and empowering young people to reach their full potential, potentially shaping tomorrow’s entrepreneurs and community leaders.”
Interested business leaders and community members can complete an Expression of Interest with Alesco College to support the program.
