Catherine Hill Bay Master Plan on public exhibition

Catherine Hill Bay Master Plan on public exhibition

Lake Macquarie City Council’s draft master plan for Catherine Hill Bay is now open for public exhibition.

If implemented, the plan could see Catherine Hill Bay with a new community hub decked out with a hall, cafe, amenities, and social rooms.

Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Asset Management, Helen Plummer said a new Surf Life Saving Club and a neighbourhood play space were also proposed for the Catherine Hill Bay Precincts Master Plan.

“This plan really focuses on boosting Catherine Hill Bay’s sport, recreation and community facilities to help enhance people’s experience, as well as preserve and beautify the area,” Helen said.

“We have actively engaged with the local community over the past nine months through surveys and in-person discussions to listen to their needs, so we’re thrilled to say this plan is a direct result of that.”

The draft plan identifies the surf club building at the southern end of Catherine Hill Bay and the northern oval, as well as its surrounds, selected as two precincts to host the new infrastructure.

Section Manager Community Assets, Brendan Callander said Catherine Hill Bay was a unique and special place that boasts important State-listed heritage, environmental, and social qualities.

“With a growing population and limited public infrastructure, this is an essential opportunity to plan for long-term needs while maintaining the traditional aesthetic of the area,” Brendan said.

“We also recognise that the town is entirely State-heritage listed due to its rich and unique mining history, as well as its scenic qualities.”

Council is proposing to build a heritage trail connecting the precincts, which would encompass part of the former railway alignment, to create a rich experience for both locals and visitors.

Once adopted, the master plan will guide development in Catherine Hill Bay for the next decade.

Community members are invited to give feedback on the draft master plan, which can be viewed online at shape.lakemac.com.au/chb until Sunday 7 August 2022.
