Lake Macquarie City Council has released a draft strategy to provide guidance on how Council plans to set an environmentally responsible example by incorporating sustainable building practices in its community buildings.
Council’s Acting Manager Sustainability, Symon Walpole, said the Better Buildings Strategy for Community Buildings will apply to facilities such as community halls, libraries and sports centres and will be implemented across all stages of works, regardless of whether Council is planning to design and construct a new community building or upgrade an existing one.
“With 325 community buildings across the City, it’s great to have a strategy in place that help makes community buildings more efficient and cheaper to operate, as well as being sustainable,” Symon said.
“This approach will reduce the running costs for both Council and the community groups who use these facilities, as well as reducing environmental impacts.”.
“The types of community buildings addressed in this strategy include community halls, childcare facilities, aged and disability services, libraries, cultural buildings, multi-purpose centres, sporting and aquatic centres, public amenities and sporting club amenities.”
