ABC Newcastle and Hunter Water partner in Water Warriors campaign

ABC Newcastle and Hunter Water have partnered in a water conservation campaign called Water Warriors to help save precious water resources, following the start of restrictions across the Lower Hunter for the first time in 25 years.

The campaign will see local families competing in challenges to lower their weekly water usage, with the winning Water Warrior taking home a water tank valued at $10,000.

Second prize is a water efficiency kit (valued at $5,000), third prize is a $500 gift card and fourth prize, a tour of The Reservoir and an ABC Pack.

Each ABC Newcastle program (Breakfast with Dan and Jenny, Mornings with Kia Handley and Drive with Paul Turton) will partner with one of the families to explore issues around water saving techniques as well as discuss some commonly asked questions:

  • What do water restrictions mean for residents?
  • Should you report a neighbour if you see them breaching water restrictions?
  • Are water restrictions enforceable?
  • What is a waterless car wash?

Hunter Water will monitor the water meters of the families’ homes to determine how much water they saved, and the family that saves the most will win the competition.

ABC Newcastle Chief of Staff Lucia Hill said the campaign would include lots of water-saving tips and welcomed participants from all corners of the Hunter region.

“We’ve a very dry summer ahead so conserving water is vital,” Lucia said.

Hunter Water Acting Executive Manager Customer Strategy and Retail, Glen Robinson, said we need to be doing everything we could as a community to use water wisely.

“Like most areas across our state, our region is feeling the impact of drought, with Level 1 water restrictions starting for the first time in 25 years,” Glen said.

“We’re thrilled to partner with ABC Newcastle for this campaign to spread the importance and value of our precious resource and find ways to conserve it together.”

A panel consisting of ABC Newcastle management and Hunter Water representatives will determine the winning family.

Entries open on Monday 21 October and the competition will run for four weeks from Monday 11 November, with the winners being announced in early December.
