Civils and heavy construction entity Daracon Group, in alliance with its concrete manufacturing division Daracrete, has finalised a primary material science research venture establishing the commercial viability of transforming industrial waste into high-strength, low-carbon concrete. Undertaken as the Industry Lead alongside the University of Newcastle and the SmartCrete Cooperative Research Centre, the venture successfully integrated furnace bottom ash, a coal-fired electricity generation by-product historically designated for landfill, into commercial-grade concrete matrices.
The engineering trials yielded concrete formulations where furnace bottom ash serves simultaneously as a fine aggregate substitute and a partial cementitious replacement. Material testing logs confirmed that an optimal trial mix generated an 11 per cent increase in 28-day compressive strength metrics, while concurrently engineering a 30 per cent reduction in embodied carbon output compared to standard conventional Portland cement baselines.
The data validation aligns with structural capital investments by Daracon Group intended to capture accelerating public and private commercial demand for sustainable infrastructure materials. To transition these laboratory outcomes into civic applications, the research consortium executed a live structural deployment, constructing a functional public footpath asset utilising the low-carbon mix to compile industry-grade handling and placement frameworks.
Director of Business Development at Daracon Group, Adam Kelly noted that collaborative research partnerships accelerate the commercialisation timelines of green materials across national supply chains.
“This project highlights what can be achieved when industry, researchers and asset owners work together to solve complex sustainability challenges. By finding new uses for materials that would otherwise become waste, we have the opportunity to reduce landfill, conserve natural resources and create practical solutions that benefit both industry and the environment,” Adam said.
“For Daracon, including our alliance organisation Daracrete, this research represents another important step towards embedding sustainability into the materials we produce and the projects we deliver.”
The research completion follows the corporate commissioning of Daracon’s Buttai Recycling Centre, co-located within its heavy quarrying perimeter at Buttai. The purpose-built processing node handles high-volume structural waste reclamation, taking in concrete washout, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), structural masonry, ceramics, and industrial coal ash.
The recycling facility scales the firm’s capacity to process raw structural waste into commercial-grade recycled aggregates and civil road-base blends, lowering aggregate haulage impacts across regional New South Wales projects.
