Six regional medical researchers have been selected to participate in the 2026 Newcastle Permanent Innovators Program. Delivered by the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) in partnership with Newcastle Permanent, the six-week initiative supports early and mid-career researchers from the University of Newcastle and the Hunter New England Local Health District in translating clinical concepts into commercial and scalable healthcare applications.

The 2026 cohort is developing technical solutions across medical specialities including pediatric respiratory monitoring, oncology precision medicine, wound logistics, and genomic data analysis. The professional development curriculum concludes with a competitive Pitch Showcase in August. Following the evaluation, two participants will secure $100,000 Newcastle Permanent Innovator Fellowships, while the remaining four will receive $20,000 seed grants to fund their respective research pipelines.

CEO and Institute Director of HMRI, Professor Frances Kay said the framework provides structured commercialization pathways to accelerate the regional deployment of clinical discoveries.

“Participants work through a structured process focused on understanding healthcare challenges, working with communities and stakeholders, developing practical solutions, and building the skills to turn those ideas into action,” Frances said.

“When research, healthcare and community come together, we create the conditions for ideas to move faster towards real-world impact.”

Newcastle Permanent spokesperson, Paul Juergens noted that funding the region’s clinical research sector supports long-term healthcare infrastructure and retention of medical talent within the Hunter.

“For the second year Newcastle Permanent is proud to support emerging researchers working on practical solutions to some of the biggest health challenges facing our communities,” Paul said.

“Supporting the long-term wellbeing of the regions we serve is an important part of who we are at Newcastle Permanent, and this program helps promising local ideas to move closer to positive impact for parents, families and people experiencing major health challenges.”

“We can’t wait to see what this year’s participants achieve over the next six weeks!”

Hunter Medical Research Institute

The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) is a translational research institute. Since 1998, its pioneering partnership with the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Local Health District has delivered key translational health and medical research and technology closely aligned to community health needs.

Throughout Newcastle and the Hunter, more than 1200 clinical and biomedical researchers and support staff are employed across seven HMRI Research Programs, striving to prevent, cure and treat a diverse range of serious illnesses by translating research findings made in the laboratory and through advanced imaging techniques, into real health treatments and preventative strategies for the community.

HMRI provides vital funding and facilities to fuel research, but the heart and soul of the Institute are people, the researchers, the generous donors and supporters, the committed volunteers, and the patients who participate in trials and ultimately benefit from the research results.
