The Hunter region has secured its first consistent connection to a major international hub following the launch of Jetstar services from Newcastle Airport to Singapore via Bali. The inaugural flight departed on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, marking a significant shift in regional aviation and opening new pathways for tourism, trade and investment.
The service connects travellers from the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid North Coast to Singapore Changi Airport and its global network of more than 170 destinations. The expansion follows a period of strong demand for the airport’s Bali route, which recently increased to four flights per week.
Newcastle Airport Chair, Samantha Martin-Williams said the investment in international capability was a deliberate decision based on regional growth.
“Strong performance on these services brings us closer to securing a direct Singapore route and even greater opportunities for our region,” Samantha said.
“This route strengthens our ability to attract visitors, support local businesses and create jobs across the broader visitor economy.”
Data from the last financial year shows more than 789,000 passengers travelled between the Hunter and destinations across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Newcastle Airport CEO, Linc Horton said the new connection provides a faster alternative to travelling through Sydney.
“The Hunter is a region of travellers. These passengers are already flying through other airports, so these journeys can now begin right here in Newcastle with direct connections,” Linc said.
The new service is expected to deliver significant benefits for regional investment. Mayor of Port Stephens and Newcastle Airport Director, Leah Anderson travelled on the inaugural service to meet with international partners ahead of a scheduled Hunter Trade Mission in September.
Leah said Singapore is one of the most important aviation hubs in the world and the connection strengthens the ability to attract international visitors.
“Improved international access makes it easier for global travellers to experience everything our region has to offer, from beaches to Hunter Valley wineries,” Leah said.
Changi Airport Group Executive Vice President, Lim Ching Kiat said the addition of the Newcastle service brings the number of Australian cities connected to Changi Airport to nine.
The NSW Government has supported the route as part of a broader goal to reach 8.5 million new airline seats by 2035. Jetstar currently operates the service four times per week, with all flights from Newcastle to Bali continuing through to Singapore via a connection in Denpasar.
