Canberra business commuter flights to take off

New airline FlyPelican are launching their flights between Newcastle Airport and Canberra, to commence from Monday, 1 June 2015. In addition, flights between Newcastle and Sydney will start from Thursday, 11 June 2015.

The twice-daily services for both city pairs are on a schedule convenient for business travellers wanting to make day-return trips. Sunday flights are also scheduled.

Newcastle Airport’s Manager Aviation Business Development David Nye said that the announcement of a start date for these services is very welcome.

“The collapse of Brindabella in 2013 left a significant gap in the market for direct services to Canberra,” David said. “The business community has been very vocal in their desire to see these services brought back and I’m pleased we’ve been able to do so.”

FlyPelican’s CEO Paul Graham said that the necessary approvals to start scheduled flights for the airline had been long-awaited and he was thrilled that the first flight was now less than a week away.

“We have been working alongside Newcastle Airport to recommence the Newcastle – Canberra service,” Paul said. “Our discussions with government and business in the Hunter region has been very positive regarding the reintroduction of the service and I am really excited that come Monday we’ll be in the air.”

FlyPelican’s schedule will provide up to 22,000 seats a year on both services for Newcastle Airport passengers.

Promotional one-way web fares on the Newcastle – Canberra service start from $149 one-way and $298 return. Newcastle – Sydney fares are priced from $89 and $178 return. Flights can be purchased directly from the FlyPelican website.

“I am confident there will be a number of regular commuters to Canberra who will be very happy with this news today. As the Airport continues to grow, the real winners are our travelling public,” David concluded.
