Graduates from the University of Newcastle impact the world in many ways. From leaving their mark in the Hunter locally to in an international setting, graduates continue to showcase the region along their professional path.
In the past 44 years the University of Newcastle has celebrated over 140 alumni who have achieved success in their personal and professional lives, all while making the world a better place.
The university recently opened nominations for the 2019 University of Newcastle Alumni Awards, which is another opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of graduates across the globe.
Graduates who have made an outstanding contribution will be celebrated at a Breakfast Gala on 5 September.
Last year over 350 members of Newcastle and Hunter region’s local and business community gathered at the gala to show their support for nominees at the university’s Great Hall. Winners included Rural Doctor Dr Kristopher Rallah-Baker, Actor and Comedian Dr John Doyle AM, and local icon Dr Bernard Curran AM.
Winner of the Beryl Nashar Young Research Award, Dr Jessica Allen said that the acknowledgement of the work she has completed was a real honour.
“Just to be recognised, just to have that knowledge that people are aware of what you’re doing is an amazing feeling,” Jessica said.
For Diplomat Dr Gary Quinlan, receiving the Alumni Medal for Professional Excellence was “a source of enormous pride, I’d have to say, and very unexpected.”
“I was delighted to find that I was amongst the nominees,” Gary said.
The University of Newcastle is inviting members from the Hunter business community to nominate an achiever in their life and workplace who graduated from the university. Individuals are also able to self-nominate.
The awards recognise leadership, creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and community service with a local, national or international reach. There are nine categories available for nomination, including awards for community service, young alumni, indigenous alumni, young researchers, those making strides in the arts, and international, national, and regional leadership.
The Alumni Medal for Professional Excellence is awarded to one recipient each year.
