Port of Newcastle will showcase its sustainability achievements to the world today when it brings the globally-renowned GreenPort Live Webinar Series to Australasia for the first time.
Themed ‘Driving principles of sustainability’ the event, which attracts a global audience across the ports sector, will feature Port of Newcastle among a panel of top industry experts who will deep-dive into the latest in sustainable development and environmental practice in ports across the Asia Pacific region.
CEO Craig Carmody says attendees from across the globe will hear how Port of Newcastle is leveraging its Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) commitments as part of delivering its ambitious diversification plans to create a safe, sustainable, and environmentally and socially responsible Port for future.
“Partnerships and shared thinking are critical to Port of Newcastle’s ability to find innovative ways to realise its long-term environmentally and socially responsible projects,” Craig said.
“By collaborating with GreenPort we have a key opportunity to connect with and learn from port leaders across the globe who are also committed to leading the way in environmental management and sustainably operated ports.”
GreenPort Live Australia is being produced in association with Port of Newcastle, the first port in Australia or New Zealand to become a member of the international EcoPorts network.
Port of Newcastle has been working across the Pacific region as an advocate of the benefits of the EcoPorts initiative and encouraging other ports follow in its footsteps.
Led by facilitator Will Glamore, Chair of PIANC Australia, the panel will include Mike Gallacher, CEO of Ports Australia, who leads the country’s peak body representing the ports community and Port of Newcastle’s Senior Manager ESG, Jackie Spiteri.
Jackie Spiteri will bring her expertise in developing Port of Newcastle’s ESG Strategy as part of the Port’s strategic business objectives.
“Port of Newcastle has made great inroads to delivering against the environmental, social, governance targets and objectives set in our ambitious ESG strategy to date. This presents an exciting opportunity for the Port, as an accredited EcoPort, to share its learnings and outcomes with a broad group of like-minded stakeholders,” Jackie said.
Also joining the panel discussion is Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Declan Clausen, who will give insight into City of Newcastle’s perspective on how to successfully build a relationship between Port and City with a sustainable lens.
Completing the panel is World Ports Sustainability Program, IAPH, Technical Director Dr Antonis Michail. An engineer by trade, Dr Michail has a specialist background in environmental management of ports and freight transport systems at Master and PhD level.
Antonis will round out the panel with a global scale perspective on driving sustainability with his experience within the World Ports Sustainability Program.
GreenPort LIVE is a sister event to its cornerstone GreenPort Congress being held in Greece from 20-22 October 2021.
