University of Newcastle Quantum Scientist, Dr Lachlan Rogers has been named among UNESCO’s global Quantum Top 100, recognising researchers shaping the future of quantum science and technology.
The announcement coincides with the culmination of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025, led by UNESCO and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly.
Lachlan was among only a handful of Australian scientists included on the international list.
He has contributed to public engagement with quantum science, from national outreach initiatives to hands-on museum demonstrations seen by thousands of students.
Lachlan’s research focuses on diamond-based quantum technology, using laser light to make tiny defects in diamonds glow and reveal their quantum properties.
His work supports emerging applications in quantum computing, sensing and advanced imaging, and contributes to the second quantum revolution.
“Quantum science is full of fascinating ideas, and it is extra exciting because these ideas are right now turning into brand new technologies. In fact, the quantum industry is growing so rapidly that we are living through the beginning of quantum engineering,” Lachlan said.
“I’m passionate about sharing this story – partly because Australia is such a strong player in the world of quantum technology – and being recognised in the Quantum 100 is a great way to spread the story more widely.”
The global Quantum Top 100 was developed to recognise and champion people around the world who are working to advance research, innovation and education in this space. 400 submissions were received across five continents, telling the stories of hundreds of dedicated people who are contributing to scientific discovery, mentorship of the next generation, education, public engagement, policy and translation.
It was also designed to highlight the importance of providing opportunities to aspiring professionals and scientists.
The full list of professionals in the Quantum Top 100 can be found on the IYQ website.
