Newcastle Museum transforms into hub for youth-led innovation

Newcastle Museum will come alive as young Novocastrians take centre stage for the NM:PM Future Street Party, a highlight of the City of Newcastle’s Youth Week program.

This all-ages celebration of youth creativity and culture will feature local live music, hands-on creative workshops, and climate activism activities – all designed and led by young people. It’s part of a broader calendar of events hosted or supported by the City of Newcastle for NSW Youth Week.

With more than $10,000 in combined funding from the City of Newcastle and the NSW Department of Communities and Justice, five free, community-led events will showcase the diverse voices and talents of young people across the city.

City of Newcastle Director of Museum, Archive, Libraries and Learning, Julie Baird, said Youth Week is an important platform for young people to be seen, heard and celebrated.

“We’re proud to support Youth Week and the many ways young people contribute to our city,” Ms Baird said.

“This year’s NM:PM Future Street Party transforms the Museum into a space filled with music, creativity, and energy – all driven by the ideas of young people. It’s a brilliant way to put youth creatives first and open our doors to the next generation of changemakers.”

The program has been shaped with input from around 35 young people, with members of the Newcastle Youth Council Standing Committee helping determine which events received funding.

Councillor Paige Johnson praised the committee’s hands-on involvement.

“Young people are passionate about creating change, and the Youth Council is proof of that,” Cr Johnson said.

“By giving them a seat at the table, we’re ensuring initiatives reflect real needs and empower youth to take the lead.”

Youth Council Co-chair Ibrahim Khalid agreed, saying the events reflect the energy and innovation of young Novocastrians.

“Young people have so much to offer. This program gives us a platform to speak, share, and be part of something meaningful,” he said.

The Future Street Party at Newcastle Museum will feature live performances by Butterknife, Trophy Wyfe, The Sobars and Evan Worgan. Visitors can also enjoy badge-making and jewellery workshops, a book swap hosted by Newcastle Libraries’ Young Adult Book Club, and explore the Disrupt, Persist, Invent exhibition from the National Archives of Australia.

A climate yarning circle hosted by Youth Rising will round out the day, encouraging conversation and connection around environmental activism.

City of Newcastle

In 2030, Newcastle will be a smart, liveable and sustainable city.

Council developed and adopted a suite of strategic documents to guide delivery of Council's seven key strategic directions, outlined in the Newcastle 2030 Community Strategic Plan.

  •  A Connected City
  •  A Protected and Enhanced Environment
  •  Vibrant and Activated Public Places
  •  A Caring and Inclusive Community
  •  A Liveable and Distinctive Built Environment
  •  A Smart and Innovative City
  •  Open and Collaborative Leadership

This planning strategy has assisted in the delivery of a City Revitalisation Program that has encouraged a large investment in the City by both Government and private investors that are willing to prove that Newcastle is ready for change.
