Newcastle East secures funding to launch courtesy shuttle bus connecting the East End and Civic Precinct

East End Collective Incorporated has secured state government funding through the NSW Government’s Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner to launch a free night-time courtesy shuttle bus. Funded under the Uptown Grant Program, the venue-to-venue transport service connects Newcastle East with the Civic precinct and Honeysuckle entertainment zones to stimulate the regional night-time economy.

Led by an eight-member board of local business owners, the collective established the commercial brand Newcastle East earlier this year, engaging over 100 regional businesses across joint marketing campaigns. Operating as a six-month trial running through to March 2027, the shuttle runs on Friday and Saturday evenings between 6:00pm and 11:00pm, featuring up to 12 scheduled stops on a 30-minute loop servicing key accommodation providers, dining venues, and cultural sites.

Proposed stops along the route include Noah’s on the Beach, Novotel, The Grand Hotel, The Ship Inn, QT Newcastle, Tower Cinemas, The Delany Hotel, Koutetsu, The Dockyard, Rydges Newcastle, Customs House, and The Grain Store. If the trial demonstrates sustained passenger demand, East End Collective Incorporated will seek permanent commercial sponsorships and ongoing precinct funding to retain the transport service long term.

Chair of East End Collective Incorporated, Lukas Thodas stated that the transport link connects accommodation providers directly with local dining and entertainment venues.

“This is not just a party bus,” Lukas said.

“We’re working closely with local accommodation providers and hospitality venues to create a seamless experience. Visitors can check in on a Friday or Saturday, hop on the bus, explore the precinct, and hop off at one of our entertainment or dining venues. It’s about creating a safe, convenient and enjoyable night out while showcasing everything Newcastle East has to offer.”

Representative from Noah’s on the Beach, Maddison added that physical connectivity benefits local tourism operators and hotel guests.

“We are really keen to be involved because we can see the benefit to our guests. Newcastle East has so many beautiful historic buildings and vibrant places to enjoy. This free shuttle is a fantastic addition for visitors to our city,” Maddison said.

East End Collective Incorporated

East End Collective Incorporated was formed in early 2025 when five passionate Newcastle East business owners came together with a shared mission: to re-energise our iconic neighbourhood and transform it into a vibrant, after-dark destination for locals and visitors alike.

The outcome is a strong, unified identity designed to elevate every business in the precinct whilst inviting the community to rediscover, explore, and enjoy Newcastle East in an exciting new way.
